Jim Terry - Woodturner

I have spent a lifetime working with wood in one form or another. I became interested in woodturning in the late 90’s, a skill that has allowed me to progress from just wood projects to a new art form. I feel fortunate living in the Southeast where we have an abundance and variety of trees that grow naturally, providing a good supply of ecofriendly wood to work from. Each piece of wood I cut provides a new challenge to discover the beauty that God has created in nature. My engineering background has provided me with the mechanics of achieving proper use of turning tools and developing good tool techniques. But woodturning does not stop there. It takes us into a new form of art which causes us to not only develop our mechanical skills but also our artistic talent. The art form that we as woodturners endeavor to achieve can be studied down through history from architecture to pottery to various forms of 3-dimensional art and to the creations in nature itself. I believe that a good woodturning must demonstrate not only the quality of a well turned piece but must achieve an artistic quality that is interesting and attractive to the viewer. Woodturning is a skill where mentoring others is like no other art form for which I am aware. I have established many wonderful friendships in both the amateur and professional ranks. In addition to my studies, I have been involved in many demonstrations and workshops of not only many close friends but also many of the world’s finest turners. I only hope that each piece I create can enable the beholder to visualize the joy and pleasure I had in making it. A member of the American Association of Woodturners and the Piedmont Triad Woodturners Association. Thanks for taking a look at my site. The galleries contain a variety of items that represent some of my more recent work.
